Expert Advice: The Dos and Don'ts of Swimming Pool Maintenance

Swimming pool maintenance is essential for keeping your pool clean, safe, and inviting. Proper upkeep not only extends the lifespan of your pool but also ensures a healthy swimming environment for you and your loved ones. By following expert advice and adhering to best practices, you can enjoy a sparkling pool all year round.

Dos of Swimming Pool Maintenance

Regularly test the water chemistry using a pool test kit to maintain proper balance. This includes monitoring pH levels, chlorine levels, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Balanced water prevents bacteria growth and equipment damage.

Skim the pool surface and clean out debris using a leaf skimmer to prevent clogging and maintain optimal filtration. Brush the walls and tiles weekly to prevent algae buildup and ensure a clean pool surface.

Run the pool pump for at least 8-12 hours a day to ensure proper circulation and filtration of the water. Regular circulation helps distribute chemicals evenly and prevents stagnation.

Don'ts of Swimming Pool Maintenance

Avoid adding chemicals directly to the pool surface. Instead, dilute chemicals in a bucket of water before adding them to the pool to prevent damage to the pool liner or surface.

Don't neglect regular maintenance tasks such as backwashing the filter, cleaning the skimmer baskets, and inspecting the pump for any issues. Neglecting these tasks can lead to poor water quality and equipment malfunction.

Avoid draining the pool completely unless necessary for repairs. Draining a pool can cause the pool structure to shift or pop out of the ground, especially in areas with high water tables.
