However, many pool owners find shocking intimidating. How much shock should you use? What type is best? Why does the water look cloudy after adding it?

What Is Pool Shocking (Hyperchlorination)?

"Shocking" a pool simply means adding a high concentration of sanitizer (typically chlorine) to raise the Free Chlorinelevel high enough to destroy organic matter, bacteria, algae, and combined chlorine compounds.

Free Chlorine vs. Combined Chlorine (Chloramines)

To understand why shocking is necessary, you need to understand two key numbers on your water test kit:
